Hagan Homes recently had the pleasure of sitting down with acclaimed architect Des Ewing for over an hour to discuss his illustrious career and latest project, Water's Edge.

Ewing was warm and generous with his time, offering fascinating insights into his design process and vision for the future of architecture.

We began by delving into Des’s unexpected entry into the field.

"As a student, I had my heart set on a career in television production. But after a discouraging tour of a studio, the technicians told me to avoid TV at all costs. I knew I loved creative problem-solving and the visual arts, so architecture seemed a good fit."

Des attended college and quickly found his niche in high-end residential design. "I loved focusing on individual homes and bringing joy to people in their personal spaces." His talent was evident from the start, and soon commissions were pouring in from around the UK and Ireland.

When asked what first attracted him to the Water's Edge site, Ewing became animated. "The cliffs overlooking the Lough just sang to me. I immediately envisioned classical Italian-inspired buildings to take advantage of those stunning views." He went on to enthuse about the site's quiet location and easy access to Belfast.

We delved into the specific design elements that would bring Des’s vision to life. "Simplicity and proportion were key to achieve that timeless look. I wanted flowing indoor-outdoor spaces and ensured water views from all units."

Des also discussed thoughtfully integrating the lower floors. "Rather than a separate structure, they blend seamlessly into the landscape through extensive landscaping and retaining walls." The result is a development that sits lightly on the land.

Sustainability has always been a driving force for Des. "As resources become scarcer, luxury homes must get smaller but better. Quality over quantity is key, as is reusing existing structures wherever feasible." He sees a growing demand for restrained understated elegance versus ostentatious displays of wealth.

For those just starting out, Des’s advice was thoughtful. "Find your niche, whether it's a type of design or a location. Specialising will set you apart. But most of all, remember architecture is about people - focus on enhancing lives through your work."

It's clear Des Ewing's passion and expertise have combined to create something truly special at Water's Edge. I encourage you to follow this visionary architect's future projects on social media. The world of design is brighter thanks to talents like Des Ewing.
